IMS / Information Management System - Middleware News

IMS / Information Management System IMS Overview IMS: ===== IMS (Information Management System) is a database and transaction management system that was first introduced by IBM in 1968. Since then, IMS has gone through many changes in adapting to new programming tools and environments. IMS is one of two major legacy database and transaction management subsystems from IBM that run on mainframe MVS (now z/OS) systems. The other is CICS. It is claimed that, historically, application programs that use either (or both) IMS or CICS services have handled and continue to handle most of the world's banking, insurance, and order entry transactions. IMS consists of two major components, the IMS Database Management System (IMS DB) and the IMS Transaction Management System (IMS TM). In IMS DB, the data is organized into a hierarchy. The data in each level is dependent on the data in the next higher level. The data is arranged so that its integrity is ensured, and the st...

How the WebSphere MQ-IMS bridge deals with messages - Middleware News

How the WebSphere MQ-IMS bridge deals with messages When you use the WebSphere® MQ-IMS bridge to send messages to an IMS™ application, you need to construct your messages in a special format. You must also put your messages on WebSphere MQ queues that have been defined with a storage class that specifies the XCF group and member name of the target IMS system. These are known as MQ-IMS bridge queues, or simply bridge queues. A user does not need to sign on to IMS before sending messages to an IMS application. The user ID in the UserIdentifier field of the MQMD structure is used for security checking. The level of checking is determined when WebSphere MQ connects to IMS, and is described in the security section of the WebSphere MQ for z/OS System Setup Guide. This enables a pseudo signon to be implemented. The WebSphere MQ-IMS bridge accepts the following types of message: * Messages containing IMS transaction data and an MQIIH structure (described in the Start of changeApplica...

CICS / what is CICS?

CICS / what is CICS? CICS (Customer Information Control System) is a transaction server that runs primarily on IBM mainframe systems under z/OS and z/VSE. CICS is a transaction manager designed for rapid, high-volume online processing. This processing is mostly interactive (screen-oriented), but background transactions are possible. While CICS has its highest profile among financial institutions such as banks and insurance companies, over 90 percent of Fortune 500 companies are reported to rely on CICS (running on z/OS) for their core business functions[citation needed], along with many government entities. CICS is used in bank-teller applications, ATM systems, industrial production control systems, insurance applications, and many other types of interactive applications. Recent CICS Transaction Server enhancements include support for Web services and Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs). IBM began shipping the latest release, CICS Transaction Server Version 4.1, which contains su...
